ESSAY

Fifty Years of Art in Pakistan

By Niilofur Farrukh

The contemporary artist of Pakistan is heir to a multi-layered legacy of traditions. This young country has been home to not only one of the world’s oldest and longest surviving civilizations, the Indus Valley Civilization, but has also witnessed the timeless intermixing of religion and culture. Tradition has seldom been challenged here; the foreign is merely absorbed by the indigenous, forever evolving into dynamic and diverse social practices. Contemporary Pakistani art reflects this dynamic process, as seen in the works of Chughtai, Ustad Allah Baksh, Shakir Ali, Sadequain, and many other artists.
